Matias Martinez

Martias is an Indigenous Latin American artist of Mapuche descent based in Calgary, Alberta. He creates a combination of Glass, Paintings, and social practices. His body of work is largely driven by his identity and his love to create as it allows him to tap into his curiosity without restraint alongside creating an artistic community that he loves. Identity, Love, Memories, Experientiality, and Commonality are all themes that are expressed through his work and aim to create a connection within the viewer themselves.

As an artist, Matias’s style of creation is organic in nature in the sense that his work is heavily affected by how he feels, what happens in his day and even the type of music that he listens to in the moment of creating. Matias has adopted a Rhizomatic approach to creating where he may have all his tools, techniques and ideas with him, however how they come into play is determined by his state of emotions and momentary inspiration. His process of creation can be compared to approaching a beautiful scenic hike filled with different viewpoints and pathways that ask you to trust that you are well prepared to tackle any trailhead and its unique obstacles. He creates until he finds his desired trailhead and enjoy the view of his freshly made work of art. This wildish approach is one that feels like a dance that he can become fully entangled with.

His most recent work is rooted in rediscovering his indigenous identity and the culture which has been lost in a generation’s time. He is inspired by ancient stories, ways of life, myths, religion, and how to incorporate all of that into a contemporary art practice along with where it fits into his everyday life. His work aims to shine a light on his Mapuche identity, culture, and storytelling as he rediscovers it himself through contemporary means and practices.
